Kilauea Volcano, The Big Island, Hawaii
Combining excitement with just the right measure of danger and uncertainty, no experience is as challenging nor carries a payoff so rewarding as shooting an active volcano. For a month I lived and worked on Hawaii’s Big Island while keeping a Spartan schedule, waking up at 1:00 am to shoot lava brightened only by starlight. Even a sliver of sunlight can destroy a shot. It’s like watching fireworks at noon. The day before I walked on this very lava, it was actually magma–bubbling within the Earth’s crust. Still, I couldn’t squander the opportunity to forever capture these rope-like rivulets of lava. Treading lightly on terra that wasn’t yet terribly firm, my fears reached their zenith when I set up my tripod only to watch its legs hiss, burn and slowly melt.
